As I review the last chapters, I have to say
Maybe Kubo's attitude to not kill off any SS characters was all a plan.
So that he'd have more to kill off now.

I mean, atleast Hinamori is definitely dead... being stabbed by Toshirou, Kyouraku and also getting hit by nigeki kessatsu, which alone should mean instant death.

Also, I'm a little confused here though. Didn't somebody say that the old man founded the Shinigami academy 1000 years ago? So if SS has been around longer, then were there 13 squads before that time? If so, how were new shinigami chosen if the acadamey didn't exist?

Well wiki says that Yamamoto founded the Shinigami Academy about 2100 years before the current time. Also the academy is for training new shinigami. People with strong reiatsu are scouted and admitted to the academy to receive training and those who graduate become shinigami's. Before that each squad probably had their own way of training people with strong reiatsu into new shinigami. It could also be that the ones with potential to become a shinigame just trained alone or formed groups to train together. I'm pretty sure that 13 squads existed before that 'cus there were Captain Commanders before that if there is a commander there has to be a army too. They probably chose people with very high reiatsu automatically and people with weaker reaitsu probably had to prove them selves in some way slaying a hollow, fighting a shinigami etc.
