    First Impressions Winter Animes 2010

After a year of “First-Impressioning” we gladly resume with the new animes who lead in the year 2010. As most might know, this thread is for the people who don’t want to watch every new anime to see if it’s any good. In that case, we take on the role as judges for the first episode and give you our opinion. According to the first impression, you might want to check it out, or not! Every time this thread starts, there are also other who like to convey their feeling regarding the new animes, these can be found under my post. Note that this thread gets updated till every new anime has been reviewed. Well, let’s get started.

Baka to Test to Shokanju 3.5/5

Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life, Games
The translation of the title is: Idiots, Tests and Summoned Creatures. Well that’s this series well put together in 3 words. The playground is a school, which has classes from A to F, the lower you get, the worse the classroom gets (A has their own mini-bar, while F needs to fix their own desks with glue all the time). To make things interesting, everyone can summon a chibi (tiny) version of themselves and fight against each other, the more points you scored on the last test, the more power the chibi gets. The fights occur in turn-based easy drawn and very childish battle stages (see picture in spoiler). This anime is fun, refreshing and surely made me laugh. Some kind of main story presents itself in the end and at least got me hooked up for more.
    Chu Bra 2/5

    Genre: Ecchi, Slice of Life
For the girls who don’t know what underwear they have to wear, watch Chu Bra! No I am serious. Chu Bra is basically an ecchi anime for the boys and a (kind of) educational program for girls to dress according to their bust and waist size. Since the audience gets a lot of incredibly good tips from underwear maniac Nayu who is also being suspected to be a prostitute because she has been wearing adult panties since junior high. Well, this is just another ecchi school anime and I have seen enough of those.
    Cobra The Animation 3/5

    Genre: Action, Science Fiction
Cobra is a franchise dating from 1982 in which it debuted with a movie called Space Adventurer Cobra, followed by a 31-episode season. After this there came a remake in 2008 called Cobra The Animation: Psychogun and a sequel was made called Timedrive. I haven’t seen any of these and just started watching Cobra The Animation (which is a sequel to Timedrive, so I heard). It seems Cobra has made a fresh new start in this series so any knowledge is not needed of previous series, however I do expect that one wants to watch the previous OAV’s if this season was satisfying. Cobra The Animation stays true to it’s old-fashioned drawing style and music, emitting a very nostalgic feeling. The first episode was not extraordinary but still worth watching. The most striking points of this episode were the nose of the driver in the first scene, the evil laughter of the villain and the presumably flexible outfits which every girl is wearing.
Dance in the Vampire Bund 3.5/5

    Genre: Supernatural, Action
Since vampires are hot these days, a lot of animes have been in the light of vampires… hmmm I should say that differently ;D. Dance in the Vampire Bund (that’s a mouth full) starts surprisingly good with an interlude of the main story, using a television program (for people who have never seen a Japanese talk show, it basically looks like this; very good representation if you ask me). As I don’t want to spoil anything, I’ll stick with the basics: the graphics were average, the story seems to be something out of the ordinary (vampires who publicly make an appearance you say?) and vampires can also look like chameleons. The only thing that really bothered me (next to the chameleon) is the voice actor of the vampire queen. But this needs further judging before making a verdict.
    Durarara 4/5 Recommendation

Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Supernatural, Comedy, Action
Following the story of the very fragile main character who encounters a lot of different (and odd) people in Tokyo. To be quite honest, you get bombarded with so many names that it’s overwhelming. At the same time, you follow an online chat which concerns the main issue of Durarara, this main issue als gets it’s debut in the first episode: the mysterious black bike driver, with its terrifying cat-ear helmet. Overall makes Durarara a very good first impression with exceedingly good graphics which make a solid representation of how Tokyo really is. Recommendation for people who liked Darker Than Black or The Skull Man, although I’m afraid you probably don’t have to try if you are in for the fighting scenes, since those weren’t much of a sensation.
    Enjoy this P of Durarara:
    Katanagatari 3/5

    Genre: Action, Adventure
After a long wait we finally get a chance to watch one of the most anticipated animes of this season. Katanagatari wins over quite an audience just with it's extraordinary animation style, which looks like a crossing between a computer game and a children's anime. Why did we have to wait so long for this first episode to release? Because this episode is 49 minutes long! This first episode is the introduction to the story which is something around the lines of "take down a lot of strong guys for me please?", which is basically a win/win for the shounen fans among us. However I left my shounen years behind me and did seem to be quite irritated by the slowness of this episode. Even though Katanagatari is in this episode not even close to a real fighting anime, the short fighting scene which I expected to be good, turned into an endless chit-chat and some weak jokes. Anyways, leaving the fighting and the story behind me, I do still quietly hope for some more hardcore "ultimate moves" which the main character (who is a swordsman, but does not use sword :| ) so much talks about.

    Ladies vs Butlers 2.5/5

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Ecchi (Warning: Contains Nudity)
After seeing tons of butler animes and live-actions one must be thinking… are there really butler and maid universities out there? Do all the girls always wear those outfits?!?! A transfer student sets for the first time foot on the perimeters of the profound butler/maid university. As this is an ecchi anime, the main guy floors down the main girl in the first scene and he accidentally takes a “gentle” stroke over the chest. Normally an anime would end with this, but….. A chain reaction of molesting girls, fainting girls, undressing girls unleashes and the audience is forced to watch the pathetic acts of the main guy trying to make futile attempts at explaining. Only to end up meeting the sadistic childhood friend he thought he would never see again in his life. So yes, this is going to be a “I-Torture-You” + “bonus uncensored girls” anime which some people love, and some people don’t…
    Nodame Cantabile: Final 4/5

    Genre: Music, Romance, Comedy, Drama
Note: This is the last of 3 seasons.
Normally I don’t do sequels but since I reviewed the second season too I found it to be appropriate to also review this. To remind the reader, I wanted to note that the second season (France Chapter) lacked music and was a bit too full of drama. This season starts out with the usual things that make this anime worth watching: music, laughter and some hard-to-figure-out situations. It is surprising how much unexplained things happen in this first episode that makes me want to see the next episode. I don’t have to mention the extreme commitment that the makers of the anime have done to make whole orchestra’s in elegant 3D style, which is always a joy to watch. But, the most important point for me is actually the comedy: I especially like everyone’s reactions to each other, mainly the reactions to Nodame’s weird personality. However, Chiaki is peculiar too, in a way….
Conclusion: If you have not yet watched this series, be sure to take a look. And if you did, I want to remind you that there is also a live-action drama of this and is worth watching too, if you can tolerate Japanese acting though .
    Omamori Himari 2.5/5

    Genre: Ecchi, Supernatural, Action, Romance
A boy who just found out that he possesses great powers of the demon hunter, gets hammered with the problem of two girls fighting over him. One of the girls is the childhood friend and the other is an ayakashi (mystical creature of Japanese mythology). The great thing about this ayakashi girl is, that she is a cat, has a huge rack and uses a sword to kill other ayakashi to protect the naïve demon hunter who doesn’t seem to have any powers at the moment. An interesting relation thus arises between the three and the quest to take down all kinds of ayakashi in the progress of winning over the main character do look a bit promising. This somehow reminded me of Rosario + Vampire, only this series lacks more good looking girls (or are they still to come??? :P ).
    Ookamikakushi 3/5

    Genre: Mystery, Supernatural, Thriller
It’s been some time since I have seen an interesting thriller anime. Ookamikushi makes one think: everyone in school is acting a bit weird, there is a dangerous wolf god in the area, people disappear, no one walks outside after 8. Being stuck with these questions it is pretty easy to keep a hold of the audience’s attention. The animation stands out for being slick, straightforward and very smooth, in my opinion one of the best points of this anime. This anime emits a same sort of feeling like the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni series: mysterious and creepy.

    Seikon no Qwaser 1.5/5

    Genre: Supernatural, Action, Ecchi
A look-a-like of D.Gray-Man’s Allen Walker makes its appearance in the religiously tinted anime Seikon no Qwaser. At first this might seem like an interesting anime with possibly good fighting scenes, but you soon notice its abundance of ‘Japanesness’: big boobs, tiny boy main character (also the surprising point of interest these days: Russia), a lot of girls and redundant fanservice. If it was not for the slight censure of the girls moaning voices, this could pass as a soft hentai without nudity. The action scene was short, dull and boring. I can’t get heated up by this kind of low quality performing.
Note: Resemblances are also to be found in Shakugan no Shana (blue fire etc) and a bit of alchemy like Fullmetal Alchemist.
    Sora no Woto 3.5/5

Genre: Music, Military, Slice of Life, Drama
The world is at war and the only sound the soldiers want to hear are the retreat sounds of the trumpet. The main character has become interested in music and decides to join the military to become a trumpeter. Sora no Woto uses the same character design as K-ON (2009), this probably seemed to be appropriate after K-ON’s musical success… Although I think the success lay more in the main characters being all little cute girls, which is surprising of Sora no Woto, since some of the girls seems to be exact replicas of K-ON. The scenery drawings are very ingenious and are also a point of this anime to just take a look at this drawn masterpiece (see spoiler). This anime looks like it has more potential than cute little girls using music instruments and I am hoping to see some military issues being brought to light, although this might just be my own wishful thinking.
Note: after her good performance as rich, manly girl in Nyan Koi (2009), voice actress Yu Kobayashi has been chosen for both Sora no Woto and Ookamikakushi and is doing a great job, which made her one of my favourite voice actresses. *In SnW she plays the blue haired girl, in Ookamikakushi the main character (as male)*

68neko’s first impressions of Winter 2010 anime. Note: With one exception, I won’t be reviewing sequels or OVAs. Updates are in blue.

Baka to Test to Shōkanjū 2/5
Scoring poorly on the placement exam, Yoshii Akihisa is relegated to the lowest Class F at Fumizuki Academy where students are not only segregated by academic ability, the smarter classes get better facilities. Top ranked Himeji Mizuki is placed in Class F when she gets sick on the test day, so self-appointed class rep Sakamoto Yuuji decides to use her as a secret weapon in an exam summoning battle to challenge Class E for its room. The 2D computer game style fighting and chibi combatants were dull and uninspiring.

      Chu-Bra!! 2/5
At the Ōnan Middle School welcoming ceremony, class representative Hayama Nayu trips in front of the whole school and exposes her black lace underwear. This causes rumors to circulate that she’s dating a sugar daddy, so curious classmates Jinguji Yako and busty Shiraishi Haruka spy on her to find out the truth. They are surprised to discover they have a thing or two to learn about bras and panties. With a lively OP and possibly some educational value, Chu-Bra!! ultimately boils down to just plain ol’ fanservice.

Cobra The Animation: Rokunin no Yūshi 4/5
On Venus for Christmas Eve, studly playboy Cobra literally runs into the voluptuous Secret who is being chased by Blackborn of the Pirate Guild for the Key of Shiva that must be delivered to Professor Toporo in order to save the Planet Galon. LOL If that isn’t exciting enough, Cobra uses his “psychogun” arm to shoot the ram-headed Zoros and other bad guys. This corny but action-packed sequel full of muscled men and curvaceous women reminds us of why the old school anime were so great.

Dance in the Vampire Bund 3/5
The first episode is a realistic re-creation of a Japanese celebrity talk show where the guests are debating the existence of vampires, following a string of murders that look like the work of a vampire. The surprise guest, Bella Tooth – “queen of the vampires,” is a trap to draw out the serial killer. The essence of Japanese television is nailed perfectly, but the animation is full of shortcuts and even the action sequences feel stilted. Only the plot twist at the end saves this episode and entices interest in wanting to watch more.

      Durarara!! 4/5
Ryugamine Mikado moves to Tokyo to attend Raira Academy and is shown around by an old friend of his, Kida Masaomi, who introduces him to his friends and the lively night street scene around Ikebukuro. By a stroke of good fortune, they are able to catch a glimpse of the mysterious legendary black bike racing through the streets. Although the first episode feels like it’s still introducing us to the story, it had great artwork, good pacing, and a cool OP & ED. And best of all, a cameo appearance by Horo!

      Hanamaru Kindergarten 3/5
On the way to his first day of work as a kindergarten teacher, Tsuchida-sensei spies a little girl standing alone on the street and stops to ask if she’s okay. The precocious little Anzu mistakenly believes Tsuchida is hitting on her, which becomes significant when she ends up being a student in his class. This slice-of-life comedy follows Tsuchida-sensei, the lively Anzu, and her classmates – the reserved Hiiragi and bashful Kōme. Although the artwork is simple, the characters are quite funny which makes this worth a second look.

      Hipira-kun 2/5
Hipira is a young vampire boy living in the town of Salta where it is perpetually night. A classmate tells him that a strange light is emanating from the home of one of his teachers, Chōrō-sensei, who has been absent from school. He goes to investigate and as he enters the light filled room, the 5 minute episode comes to an end. The slightly awkward movements of the characters are clearly the result of CG animation, but the backdrops of this vampire town are visually interesting and highly detailed.

      Kaito Reinya 2/5
In a short 3½ minute episode, Phantom Thief Reinya and her trusty partner in crime, Chutarō the mouse, make plans to steal a golden bowl of umakabai noodles from under the noses of the incompetent Inspector Midoru and his police staff. Much of the humor is derived from puns and the Fukuoka Hakata dialect that Reinya speaks, plus other references to Fukuoka. The 2D animation is bright and colorful but cartoonish. Good for a laugh but having to read the translator’s notes to get the jokes takes out some of the punch.

      Katanagatari 5/5
Living in exile on an island, Yasuri Shichika and his sister Nanami receive a surprise visit from the white haired Togame, a female strategist for the Shogunate who asks Shichika to lend his skills in kyotō-ryū (swordless style) to capture 12 demon swords crafted by the legendary swordsmith Shikizaki. Together, Shichika and Togame set off on a journey to find and reclaim the swords. The artwork, action, music, and character development are all outstanding in this first of 12 hour-long episodes, each featuring one of the swords.

      Ladies vs. Butlers 2/5
Hakurei-Ryou Academy is divided into two sections: upper-ed for refining privileged young ladies, and servant-ed for training their future maids and butlers. Through a non-stop series of accidents and misunderstandings, servant-ed transfer student Hino Akiharu enrages Selna Iori Flameheart and others in a boob-grabbing, panty flashing, ecchi-fest until his long forgotten childhood friend Saikyo Tomomi saves him. I found the loads of fanservice, clumsy maids and typical shrill ojousama repetitive and irritating.

      Omamori Himari 3/5
Descended from an eminent line of ayakashi demon slayers, Amakawa Yuuto has been shielded from ayakashi attacks by an omamori (protective charm) given to him by his grandmother. Now that its power has diminished, the well endowed, sexy cat girl samurai Noihara Himari comes to protect Yuuto, much to the chagrin of neighbor Kuzaki Rinko who harbors feelings for him. Despite the detracting upskirt shots, the love triangle of sophisticated “supergirl” vs. sweet “girl-next-door” looks promising.

      Ōkamikakushi 4/5
Minutes after arriving at his new home in the town of Jōga, Kuzumi Hiroshi is practically bowled over by Tsumuhana Isuzu who declares her love for him. Even at school, his classmates are unusually friendly and welcoming until the cool Kushinada Nemuru puts an end to it. Hiroshi begins to learn of the odd quirks about the place that are reminiscent of the uneasy feeling of the village in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. The prologue is strangely detached and confusing, but there is potential for a good horror story here.

      Seikon no Qwaser 1/5
On the way home from St. Mihailov Academy, stepsisters Oribe Mafuyu and Yamanobe Tomo run into a strange and perverted boy who Mafuyu knocks out when he gropes Tomo. Later that night, heretics looking for a religious icon hidden by Tomo’s father attack the school church and capture Mafuyu. The mysterious boy from earlier comes to protect her with his supernatural powers. The animation is poor, action sequences were overly dramatic, and the girls’ intelligence is inversely proportional to their cup size.

      Sora no Woto 3/5
Cute little Sorami Kanata joins the Helvetia Republic Army because she wants to learn how to play the bugle. Before reporting to duty in the remote town of Seize, she joins the locals in a messy festival that stains her uniform. Fortunately she is rescued by the tsundere Kazumiya Rio, who turns out to be her future sergeant as well as an extremely talented trumpet player. With a moe all girl platoon manning the fortress, the feeling is something like K-ON! meets Valkyria Chronicles.

these animes, along with that new one with the kinder gardeners are what im going to be watching this season, mainly because of animation styles and the writing (comedy wise)
    1. Llamaben`'s Avatar
I was really off with my first impressions last season (mostly on how great Letter Bee, Sora no Otoshimono and Asura Cryin S2 became), hopefully they'll be more accurate for this one.

I have included impressions of second episodes when there was a big change. All impressions from ep2 will be included in spoiler tags.

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu 5/5
Simply brilliant... I do love comedy animes, and the style of this perfectly fits my tastes. It made me re-watch the first episode twice, and the second episode once (I have never re-watched episodes of a short ongoing anime, and I have barely re-watched anything at all). Best first episode I have seen.

      Cobra the Animation 3/5
A nice "new old" anime. Its kind of an anime that you'll hate or like...

      Chu Bra 1.5/5
The OP was clearly the best part of the episode, but I guess its watchable.

Dance in the Vampire Bund 3.5/5
Never expected anything good from it, but the first episode wasn't bad. I liked the simulation of the game show, and it seemed a little more realistic then most anime...
      Episode 2 2/5
This episode was terrible... it has a terrible color pallet, and now I know that SHAFT + Action = Fail

      Durarara 4.5/5
I had my doubts, since I didn't like Baccano that much, but this is great. Good character designs, brilliant color pallet, and a deep story.

      Hanamaru Youchien 1/5
This was the one full length anime I told myself I wasn't going to watch this season... However, I did watch, and it was as bad as I expected.

      Hidamari Sketch x ☆☆☆ 3/5
I personally don't like this genre much, but I do find Hidamari Sketch (including previous seasons) quite enjoyable. So far, this season seems just as strong as the others.

      Ladies Vs Butlers 2/5
I like the main characters childhood friend, but dislike all other characters... It has a tiny bit of potential, but overall it is quite poor.

      Nodame Cantabile Finale 4/5
Without the great director Nodame had for S1, Paris-hen was butchered (still good, but nowhere near its potential), and this season probably will be as well... Seems a little too rushed so far, but that does not change the fact that it has great characters and comedy.

      Omamori Himari 2.5/5
Last season I said Blacksmith was one of the most generic animes, but this is much more generic... It has terrible animation at times, but the characters are decent, and it is still quite enjoyable.

      Ookami Kakushi 4/5
I had really high hopes for this, ever since the day the game came out... AIC has done a good job with the animation, and I love the game, however the anime has one main downfall - having one of the worst directors around (same guy as 07 ghost)... The order has already deviated a lot from the original, and I fear that it will suffer from the same problems as 07 ghost.

So Ra No Wo To 3/5
Without saying too much about obvious similarities to other animes, it still has some strong points, especially the animation. As already pointed out by others, I also believe this setting has more potential then others it is compared to.

      Seikon no Qwaser 3.5/5
While having a ridiculous plot point, Qwaser still manages to keep me entertained. The characters are likeable, it has a brilliant OP by Faylan, and the action seems like it will be very good (though so far, it isn't).

      Weiss Survive R 3.5/5
Simply put, I love the style of comedy, but it is definitely too short.

dance in the vamire bund 3/5

i rated it on the first episode but im going to include the second in my comment. Anime has always toted around on the pedo side but this anime straight pedo shit i mean the second episode has the vampire queen who appears around the age of 8 strip down to her panties and then the male lead rubs oil over her body their is no censuring of any kind.

      Durarara!! 4/5

this anime seems inconsequential but slowly evolves into to a glorious look at one city and how they all act on to one another it looks to have deep plot full of unique character's

      sekion no qwaser 1/5

a show about breast milk that is what soma is check wiki its right their. really i mean really come one Japanese people this is getting a little crazy here we all no hentai is weird but this strange sexulisation that is creeping in to anime is getting disturbing

Hmm.. I would like to give Sekion no qwaser a unbiased review. Ignoring the ridiculous powers of breast milk, if you watch the uncensored version, the story development is actually quite good. Well made fight scenes and interesting character fighting abilities. I'm definitely gonna wait for the uncensored episodes before watching this.

I do suggest looking at Durarara, that one really stands out. I also like Baka to Test to Shinjoku for the laughs.

I think they saved the best for last with Katanagatari. For me, at least, it's clearly the best of the Winter 2010 season. In addition to the two main characters (one who is strong but kind of dense, and the other who is smart but kind of clumsy), I also liked the wise sister Nanami. Why can't we have more of this type of quality and less of the shameless fanservice that is becoming so pervasive?

Hope you enjoyed reading my first impressions as much as I enjoyed writing them.
